Small Actions, Big Changes is a public service campaign to help people see the direct relationship between small actions they can integrate into their daily lives, and the big effect this can have on climate change.

This group project was about generating ideas based on making links between different social sciences and our topic – Climate Change – in order to approach the project with an original viewpoint. These sciences included Anthropology, Sociology, Ecology, Economics, and Psychology.

We chose to make a link with psychology, and Small Actions, Big Changes was born. My role in this project was to come up with the actions and research the concrete change they make in the world. After the group project ended, I developed the typography and overall look independently.

Through our research on psychology we found that when people see the direct relationship between their efforts and the effect, they are more motivated to make these changes. Studies show the most effective motivator when it comes to climate change is specific to the individual’s situation, so showing people exactly how they could personally contribute to reducing the effects of climate change is important.

So, we tried to find small things that make a big difference. They ranged from taking shorter showers, to eating less red meat, and then we quantified it in terms of actual data and numbers. Shaving two minutes of your shower can save 4000 gallons of water a year and eating less red meat can reduce your annual carbon footprint by one fourth - these don’t seem like huge daily changes, right? But they make a big difference over time. This way people can slowly integrate these small things into their daily lives and feel like they’re making a difference in a remarkably easy way.
