The Oracle of Hermes is a tarot deck comprised of the 22 Major Arcana cards inspired by Greek Mythology, with an accompanying mobile app, called “The Oracle” for short.

The app has live reading features that help the user interpret their tarot readings, as well as giving lessons and background in Greek mythology at the same time.

In occult practices, the Major Arcana are the trump cards of a tarot pack. Trump cards are a valuable resource that may be used, especially as a surprise, in order to gain an advantage in card games. There are usually 22 such cards in a standard 78-card pack. The other 56 are called the Minor Arcana, and this is what makes up the typical playing card deck today.

I created this as my independent project for my Master’s review. The illustrations are all based directly on historical statues, frescos, or historical representations of each figure. I used a line drawing technique and played with filling in negative spaces to create visual interest and contrast.

The Oracle App

With live reading features and a card library, it is easy to know exactly what each card means, and who is depicted on each one. You don’t have to go to a professional reader or have to google each card and meaning separately. The app also gives you the option save your previous tarot readings so you can go back and see how the drawings lined up with your real life and see where the two converged or diverged. It would also link you to purchase the physical deck on an online seller such as amazon or an independent book seller, and would hopefully spark an interest in Ancient Greece!
